Bwindi Impenetrable National Park
Bwindi is an ancient, steep-sided rainforest in south-west Uganda and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. About half of all mountain gorillas live here.
The four gorilla sectors
- Buhoma in the north, the first sector opened to visitors, with the easiest access from the road.
- Ruhija in the east, at higher altitude, known for birds and cooler mornings.
- Rushaga in the south, with the largest number of gorilla families and the habituation experience.
- Nkuringo in the south-west, with sweeping views and steeper terrain.
Your permit is for one sector and one family, so choosing a sector decides where you sleep. We help you pick based on your fitness and the other places on your route.
What the terrain is like
Bwindi's name is accurate: the forest is dense and the hills are steep. Expect narrow trails, wet leaves and sudden slopes. Trekking poles and a porter make the walk easier, and we arrange both on request.
When to go
The drier months, June to September and December to February, give firmer trails. The wetter months are quieter and the forest is at its greenest. See the best time to go for a month-by-month view.
