Rwanda

Volcanoes National Park, Rwanda

Volcanoes National Park protects the Rwandan slice of the Virunga range. Dian Fossey began her research of mountain gorillas here, and today the park runs one of Africa's best-organised wildlife experiences.

Getting there

The park headquarters at Kinigi, near Musanze, is roughly two to three hours by road from Kigali. Most visitors stay the night before so they can reach the morning briefing without rushing.

Beyond the gorillas

  • Golden monkey tracking in the bamboo forest.
  • The Dian Fossey trail to her grave and the old research camp.
  • Musanze caves and Lake Ruhondo for a gentler day.

A note on timing

The annual gorilla naming ceremony and the wetter months change the feel of the trip. Ask us when you plan and we will advise on the current season.

Frequently asked questions

Is trekking harder in Rwanda than Uganda?

Both vary by gorilla family. Rwanda's trails tend to be less overgrown, but the altitude is high. See our guide to difficulty.

Do I need to stay near the park?

We recommend it. An early start the day before saves long drives on the morning of your trek.
