Frequently asked questions
How much time do I spend with the gorillas?
One hour, once you find them. The walk to reach them can take from about an hour to most of a day.
How many people can visit a gorilla family each day?
A maximum of eight visitors.
What is the minimum age?
15 years old, in both Uganda and Rwanda.
Do I need a permit?
Yes, for your date and your gorilla family. We buy it for you once we have confirmed your dates. See how permit booking works.
Can I check permit availability myself?
No. Only licensed operators can see the live portal. Send us your dates and we check for you.
How fit do I need to be?
You need to walk for several hours on steep ground at altitude. See how difficult gorilla tracking is.
What should I wear?
Waterproof boots, long trousers, a long-sleeved top, gloves and a rain jacket. See what to pack.
When is the best time to go?
June to September and December to February are drier. See the best time to go.
Is it safe?
Yes. Rangers and trackers lead every group. See the rules and etiquette.
Can I trek if I have a cold?
No. Gorillas catch human diseases, so you must not trek when ill. Tell us early.
Uganda or Rwanda?
See our comparison.
Do I need a visa?
Most visitors need a visa for each country, and an East African Tourist Visa can cover Uganda, Rwanda and Kenya. Check the current rules for your passport.
Can I use a drone or flash?
Flash is not allowed near the gorillas. Ask the park about other equipment before you travel.
What is the habituation experience?
A longer visit of up to four hours with a family still being habituated, in Uganda only. See habituation or standard trek.
How much does a gorilla trek cost?
It depends on the park, season, lodge, transport and group size, so we quote each trek for your dates. See what decides the cost and ask for your quote.
How do I book?
Send your dates. A named member of our team checks them and replies with a quote, normally within 24 hours.
