How difficult is gorilla tracking?
Gorilla tracking is a moderate to strenuous walk at altitude. Most healthy travellers manage it, but you should expect steep, muddy ground.
How long will I walk?
Walks range from about an hour to most of a day. Where the gorillas slept the night before decides the distance, and no one can promise it in advance. Rangers assign families by fitness when they can, so tell them honestly how you feel.
What makes it hard
- Altitude, often above 2,000 metres, which makes you breathe harder.
- Steep slopes and slippery leaves.
- Thick vegetation where you may need to climb over roots and vines.
How to prepare
- Walk uphill with a small pack for a few weeks beforehand.
- Break in your boots.
- Hire a porter and bring trekking poles.
If you cannot walk far
Ask us about assisted options. Sedan-chair carries are available in some parks for visitors who need them.
Frequently asked questions
Can older travellers trek gorillas?
Yes. Many people in their sixties and seventies trek with porters. The minimum age is 15.
What if I get tired?
Tell your guide. You can slow down, rest and use a porter. The group moves at the pace of its slowest walker.
